Expanding Your Dental Assisting Skills in Specialties

A comprehensive dental assisting course prepares you for a wide range of roles within the dental field. Your skills in general dental assisting provide a strong foundation, including general restorative dentistry, general preventative dentistry and the basics of hygiene, and digital scanning, but understanding the specific needs of different specialty practices can open up even more career opportunities. Here’s a look at how dental assistants support dentists in various specialized areas, equipping graduates of our program for diverse roles in high-demand fields.

    • Orthodontics:  Dental assistants in orthodontics assist with procedures related to braces, retainers, and other corrective appliances. This includes preparing the treatment area, taking impressions or digital scans, and helping place or remove wires and bands. They also educate patients (often children and teens) on appliance care and oral hygiene. Our dental assisting course includes specific training and certification in orthodontics.
    • Endodontics In endodontics, dental assistants primarily support dentists performing root canals and other procedures involving the dental pulp. They prepare instruments and materials, assist during the procedure by providing suction and managing instruments, and help ensure patient comfort throughout the treatment.
    • Periodontics Dental assistants working in periodontics assist with the diagnosis and treatment of gum disease. This can involve preparing rooms for procedures like deep cleanings, scaling and root planing, or surgical treatments. They also help with patient charting and providing post-treatment care instructions.
    • Pediatric Dentistry Pediatric dental assistants specialize in working with infants, children, and adolescents. They are skilled in making young patients feel comfortable and relaxed during appointments. Their duties include preparing children for exams and procedures, assisting the dentist, and educating parents and children on proper oral hygiene techniques.
    • Implants For dental implants, assistants help dentists during both the surgical placement of the implant and the restorative phase. This involves setting up sterile surgical trays, assisting during the procedure, managing materials, and providing pre- and post-operative instructions to patients.
    • Oral Surgery Dental assistants in oral surgery practices assist with more complex surgical procedures like tooth extractions, wisdom teeth removal, and biopsies. They are crucial in preparing the surgical suite, monitoring patients during procedures, assisting with anesthesia, and providing detailed post-operative care instructions to ensure proper healing.

Each of our graduates will become a trained dental assistant in the state of Utah, with a Utah CPR License as well as OSHA, radiology, orthodontics, and digital scanning certifications.
